A young Nigerian woman, Aisha Toro, has died following a struggle with depression. Her close friend Basarakiya confirmed the death and said Aisha would be buried on Wednesday, October 7, after a funeral prayer at Jumma’a Mosque, Senior Staff Quarters, BSADP in Bauchi State. Aisha had spoken openly on X about her mental health difficulties and thoughts of suicide. Her posts grew more severe from October 1, 2026, until she died a few days later. At 11:44 pm on October 4, she wrote, “If I wake up I am going to be so mad.” Two minutes afterward, she published her last post: “Sweet d3ath.” In a tribute, Basarakiya wrote: “We had a plan to start over together, we said “fuck depression, we are starting over” house hunting and all but you left me knowing fully well that no one can tolerate me more than you.” After the news, Basarakiya drew criticism from X users who accused her of failing Aisha. One user, Ummulkhaira, wrote: “rinkitay_ spent over a week posting that she was not okay. She wrote about wanting to end it, and still, nobody noticed. This is a wake-up call. Checking on your mutuals is not optional. A comment under the post. Send DM, a simple “are you okay?” Most people who are that low leave the signs before they go. We just have to be willing to see them. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and be gentle with her.” After the criticism, Basarakiya said she would take a break from the platform to mourn her friend in peace. “I’ll be deactivating my account for a while. I can’t keep exposing myself to some people’s vile and hurtful tweets when I’m already carrying a pain I can barely put into words. I lost my sweet girl, and a part of me went with her. I’m grieving her, missing her, and trying to learn how to exist in a world without her in it,” she wrote. “I’m at the edge of snapping, and I know that’s not what my girl needs from me. Right now, I need to step away from all the noise, protect my heart, and give myself the space to grieve her the way she deserves. May your soul rest in perfect peace, you will never be forgotten.”
