Police in Bauchi State have detained two people over allegations that they attacked officers who were carrying out a routine vehicle check. The incident is said to have happened on Saturday, October 3, 2026, along Yelwa Road, Bauchi, as officers conducted enforcement under Operation Velvet.
SP Nafiu Habib, spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, disclosed the arrests in a statement on Sunday, October 4. He said personnel from the ‘E’ Division Patrol Team stopped a vehicle driven by a man identified as Friday and one Yunana Ali and requested to inspect the vehicle’s papers.
The police public relations officer said the suspects allegedly refused to obey the officers’ request, became aggressive, and physically attacked members of the patrol team. An inspector’s uniform was torn during the incident, according to Habib.
The statement said both suspects were arrested over alleged conspiracy, obstruction of officers on duty, assault, and malicious damage.
Police said that on October 3, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m., operatives of the ‘E’ Division Patrol Team, while on routine Operation Velvet enforcement along Yelwa Road, Bauchi, intercepted a vehicle driven by Friday, whose surname had not yet been established, and Yunana Ali, and politely asked to see the vehicle papers.
Instead of following the lawful instruction, the two allegedly turned hostile, refused to present the documents, and physically assaulted the patrol team, tearing the uniform of an inspector in the process, according to the statement.
The suspects were quickly restrained and taken into custody at ‘E’ Division, where a confidential investigation is underway.
Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc(+), strongly condemned the incident, calling it an insult to established authority and a deliberate bid to weaken law enforcement work meant to safeguard the public.
He repeated that attacks on officers carrying out lawful duties 'will not be tolerated', and reminded the public that the law offers lawful ways to seek redress when grievances exist.
The suspects will be prosecuted after the investigation concludes, the statement said. The Command called on residents to obey the law, cooperate with officers during routine checks, and refrain from actions that could disturb public peace.
