Cast and Characters
The film stars Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson, the creator of the Bone Temple; Jack O'Connell as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, the sadistic cult leader of the Fingers; Alfie Williams as Spike, the young protagonist from the previous film; Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson, an Alpha infected; and Erin Kellyman as Jimmy Ink/Kelli. Cillian Murphy makes his long-awaited return as Jim at the very end of the film .
Plot
The story picks up after the events of 28 Years Later, with Spike captured by the Fingers, a Satanist cult led by Jimmy Crystal. Forced into their ranks through violent initiation, Spike navigates this deadly world while forming an uneasy bond with Jimmy Ink. Meanwhile, Dr. Kelson continues his work at the Bone Temple, building a shocking relationship with Samson, an Alpha infected who begins showing signs of humanity. The paths of Kelson, Spike, and Jimmy Crystal converge in a climax that tests loyalties and questions who the real monsters are in a world stripped of civilization .
Cillian Murphy's Return
Murphy's return as Jim comes at the very end of the film in a deliberately quiet, grounded scene. Director Nia DaCosta explained that she wanted to avoid a "big return of the superhero moment," instead showing Jim living in relative isolation, now with a daughter he's helping prepare for a history exam. As DaCosta put it: "It's the return of the bike messenger" . His voice is also heard early in the title sequence, saying "Hello" from the original film .
Critical Reception
Reviews were largely positive. The AU Review called it "audacious, unflinching, and surprisingly beautiful," praising DaCosta's direction and the film's emotional core. Ralph Fiennes noted the film is "not just mindless horror," highlighting its themes about art, violence, and compassion . IGN's review returned an 8/10 .
Box Office
Despite strong reviews, the film underperformed commercially, earning just $58 million worldwide compared to its predecessor's $151 million. DaCosta suggested the quick turnaround between films may have confused audiences: "People were like, 'Oh yeah, I saw that last summer!'" .
What's Next
A third film in the trilogy has been greenlit by Sony, with Alex Garland writing and Danny Boyle expected to direct. Cillian Murphy has expressed interest in finishing the trilogy .
