Federal Government Rejects Reports of Electricity Tariff Increase

The Federal Government has rejected claims that it intends to raise electricity tariffs across the country. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe denied the reports in Abuja on Monday, September 21, during a media briefing that marked his first 100 days in office, a period spanning June 8 to September 16. Tegbe said he had received multiple calls over the weekend after reports emerged that the government was considering an upward adjustment of electricity tariffs. He characterized those reports as politically driven ahead of next year's general elections, maintaining that the administration's priority is to enhance electricity supply for Nigerians. The minister added that the government is pursuing renewable energy options and carrying out a thorough audit of power infrastructure nationwide in order to identify critical gaps and resolve them.
