Etched, the AI chip startup challenging Nvidia, is already fielding investment offers that would value it at $40 billion or more, just months after closing a massive funding round at a $21 billion valuation.

The Offers on the Table

The company is reviewing bids that range from $40 billion from top-tier investors to $50 billion from lesser-known backers, according to sources who spoke with TechCrunch. These talks are still early, so terms could change before any deal is finalized.

A History of Rapid Fundraising

Etched has repeatedly raised capital at staggering speed:

- January 2026: $500 million at a $5 billion valuation, led by Stripes

- July 2026: $300 million at a $10.3 billion valuation, led by Sequoia Capital, reportedly the highest valuation ever for a Sequoia-led Series C

- August 2026: $700 million at a $21 billion valuation, led by Jane Street

That August round more than doubled the company's valuation in less than a month and brought total funding to $1.9 billion. If Etched raises a similar amount in this new round, one source said it would provide roughly 3.5 years of runway.

Why Investors Are So Eager

Etched is pursuing an expensive but promising path: building complete AI hardware systems powered by its own proprietary chips, rather than just selling chips alone. The company focuses on inference, the computing that happens after a user submits a prompt to an AI model, and claims its chips can process more tokens faster and at lower cost than Nvidia's.

That speed advantage matters enormously to quantitative trading firms like Jane Street, which led the August round and became Etched's first customer after testing the hardware. Etched shipped its first rack to Jane Street in August and has secured over $1 billion in customer orders.

The startup has also impressed investors by attracting talent from Nvidia itself. Roughly 15% of Etched's 400-person workforce previously worked at the chip giant.

What's Next

Etched operates a 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley and has established a facility in Taiwan to coordinate production with TSMC. The company is building three generations of hardware in parallel as it scales toward what it calls "gigawatt-scale" inference infrastructure.

For now, the $40 to $50 billion offers remain exploratory. Whether Etched accepts one, and at what valuation, will be a closely watched signal of just how far investor appetite for AI infrastructure extends.
