Instinct has launched a group chat feature that lets friends use its AI agent together for tasks like planning trips, organizing carpools, and coordinating events—even if some participants don't have an Instinct account. The company says personal accounts remain separate, with permission required before personal agents share information or take action.

How It Works

Users can add a shared Instinct agent to their group chats. The agent then works on behalf of the entire group within that thread, helping explore options, reach agreement, and execute plans without requiring everyone to download the app or sign up.

Founder Noah Shinn explained the privacy model on X: a user's personal Instinct agent will request permission before connecting with the group's agent. Users can choose which groups they trust and revoke that trust at any time. The group agent is siloed from users' personal accounts and cannot access them. Personal agents also hold pending replies if new members join the chat before sharing anything with the group.

Use Cases

Instinct lists several scenarios where the shared agent could help:

- Planning trips and coordinating travel arrangements

- Snagging event tickets

- Running fantasy leagues

- Organizing carpools

- Managing who brings what to Thanksgiving

"The hard part of multi-user AI agents isn't the model, it's deciding which slice of a person's private context a shared agent is allowed to see," one analysis noted. "Instinct's new group chats are a live test of that."

Competitive Positioning

The launch puts Instinct ahead of Meta's Muse, which does not yet offer group chat functionality. Meta's older product, Meta AI, can be added to group chats on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook. Both Instinct and Muse have recently added phone calling capabilities as they compete for consumer AI market share.

The feature is rolling out initially to Instinct's early access users, with broader availability promised "soon."
