Bukola Akinpelu, a Nigerian-American nurse and social media influencer based in the United States who is widely known as Nurse Sugar, has spoken out after a video was shared by people associated with her former husband. The footage shows an earlier episode between the two. In an emotional response, Akinpelu said the recent days had been hard for her as she gets ready to put out a book about her life and experiences. She noted that while audiences may be watching the clip now, she had gone through that event years earlier. The video, she said, reflected just a small portion of the story contained in her book. She explained that one of her greatest concerns about publishing the memoir was that she might become the focus of public debate before readers had a chance to hear her full account. She said she chose to be truthful in the book, even though certain sections might be seen as her trying to defend herself. Akinpelu then read from the book, describing an episode that involved her ex-husband and a mattress in an apartment she said she was paying for. She said she confronted him and told him to leave the room following an argument. She also described filling a bucket with water and pouring it onto one side of the mattress while he was lying on the other side. "This is my truth," she said. She added that she purposely opened herself up by sharing her experiences because she wanted readers to see her as more than the clips circulating online. Akinpelu expressed gratitude to everyone who had contacted her with support. She said she was still dealing with the situation and would in time return to the self her followers recognize.
