Student Detained After Gunfire Outside Turkish High School Wounds at Least Eight

At least eight people, including students, were wounded on Tuesday when a student opened fire outside a high school in western Turkey's Manisa province, officials said. The injured were taken to hospitals after the early Tuesday shooting near a vocational and technical high school in the Turgutlu district, according to a statement from the provincial governor's office on X. Officers detained the suspect after he attempted to leave the scene, the statement said. The governor's office said it received a report of gunfire near Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu at 07:59. Authorities said the reason for the attack was still being investigated. Security forces captured and took into custody the person believed to have fired the weapon, according to the statement. The incident occurred months after two school shootings in Turkiye. In April, a former student opened fire at a high school in Sanliurfa province, wounding 16 people, most of them students. That attacker later killed himself. The following day, a 14-year-old killed nine people, including students and teachers, and wounded 13 others at his school in Kahramanmaras province. The assailant was killed by police.
