Sweden Outlines Requirements for Working Holiday Visa, Open Only to Six Countries

Sweden has detailed the conditions for young foreigners seeking a working holiday visa, saying that at present only citizens from six countries can take part. According to the Swedish Migration Agency, Sweden has bilateral youth exchange agreements with Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Those agreements allow nationals from those places, who are 18 to 30 years old, to spend as long as one year in Sweden on a working holiday. For Nigerians who want to work or live in Sweden, the existing system does not include African countries. As a result, holders of Nigerian passports cannot use the working holiday visa route and instead need to seek standard work permits, study visas or other established immigration options. To secure a residence permit under the program, applicants from eligible nations must satisfy several conditions. They must carry a valid passport from one of the six participating countries; be 18 to 30 when applying; prove they have no less than SEK 15,000 available when they arrive to cover initial living costs; hold a return ticket to their home country or show enough money to buy one; and keep comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay. That insurance must cover emergency medical care, hospitalization, emergency dental treatment and medical repatriation. Australian citizens face a different arrangement from the other five participating territories. The Swedish Migration Agency confirmed that Australians are exempt from the health insurance requirement, meaning they do not have to show full health coverage before receiving a residence permit. The other rules, such as the financial threshold, age limit, valid passport and return ticket conditions, are the same for all qualifying nationalities. People from non-participating countries, including Nigeria and the rest of Africa, must look at alternative Swedish visa categories for employment or education-based residence.
